Hi Underwater Hockeyeurs…

During the next two weeks, CanAmUWHGear will be traveling to the Parma Cup Tournament in Parma, Italy and then to the Argonauta Tournament in Breda, Netherlands. In between the tournaments, we will be joining some regional clubs for their training sessions and I am looking forward to them very much. So if your attending these tournaments please stop by our table and check out and try some of our awesome gear, I look forward to meeting you! If I’m playing against you, be sure to give me the puck, often.

Gear Talk: Mask Straps for Underwater Hockey

Just like in my previous post about fin keepers, your Mask Strap is another huge part of your equipment which allows you to play your game at the highest level. The conventional mask strap, made of silicone rubber, is good for the average player, but has severe draws backs when moving to a higher level game. The mask strap’s primary job is to keep the mask on your face in the correct orientation especially when you encounter many other player’s fins, body and once in a while, a mask removal procedure from your opponent. So what is the correct solution? There are a few options on the market, but I will focus on the webbing strap, like our CanAm Mask Strap. With the webbing strap correctly installed, it is nearly impossible to remove or re-orient the mask from your face without breaking the mask. This allows you to play more aggressively without fear of not being able to see at that crucial moment. For instance, when you watch a free puck on the 5m line in front of the goal, there are 12 body’s in such a small space and having vision is the most important thing, otherwise your on the surface with a missing mask and a missed opportunity at scoring or defending a key goal. I think this is one of the best value added items one can invest in for improving your game of underwater hockey. Gear Talk: Fin Keepers

This week’s gear talk is centered on the little known things called fin keepers or fin grippers. The primary purpose of the Fin Keeper is to keep your fins from coming off your feet. There is nothing worse than having a fin come off when you’re going for a strike, or making a breakaway to the goal I would suppose that most of you knew this, it’s really not a secret! But what you may have not known is what style of keepers are the best and how they should fit along with some secondary benefits to using them. The types of keepers, which are the best, are wide strapped, thicker material, stretchy and durable. This will help give maximum holding pressure across a greater area giving a greater success for doing it’s job. The secondary benefit of this style is that when used regularly, it will help your fin foot pocket not to stretch out so fast. The low cost of a fin keeper vs. a large cost for uwh fins, the keepers will help you receive the maximum benefit of your fin life. When it comes to fit, I always recommend trying on a pair (if you can) just to make sure that it’s not too loose. You want the keepers very snug on the foot/fin to make sure they do their job correctly thought the life of the fin and keeper. The purchase of good fin keepers is worth while investment for your game and for the life of your fins.
