A new dry land training method for Underwater Hockey?

Tips for Successful Stick Handling Improvment

The topic of stick handling is one that is quite popular amongst beginners and intermediate underwater hockey players. You may have asked, how do I get better??? There is not a one size fits all, for every one it is different. I will list some of the things that I have done to become a better stick handler and learn new and better moves…

  1. Watch videos of high level games and to see what moves work well with a high percentage success rate i.e. simple dummy
  2. Study these moves, slow down video tape of them and practice it along with the video in front of the tv/computer.
  3. Practice this move continuously until you can do it without looking at the puck (dry land training)
  4. Then practice this move in the pool, until you can do it perfectly without looking at the puck
  5. Practice the move against your teammates in a training mode – during warm up
  6. Translate this move into your game tool box, so that it will become a reflex to your game
  7. Continue to use move in game situations until your opponents know it is coming and you beat them with a high percentage rate, do to increase skill & speed with your effectiveness

This can be used to learn very simple moves or more complex moves, but in the end a complex move is made from 2 or 3 simple moves which are strung together.   Next time we will break down a few simple moves. See you on the Tiles…
